Personal Appreciation: (rank 1 to 10) 8

Japanese drama, I’m more related to this. I’m even familiar with the characters because of the previous drama I saw (Hana Yori Dango), but I’ll leave that for later. Now, let’s focus on Hana Kimi.

Oguri Shun is a well renowned japanese actor that came out strong in yet another role as the “I-don’t-care” guy. His character was a little more intense than the one in the manga, making his version of Izumi Sano to be between the line of cruel and mean. He slowly warms up to Horikita Maki (Ashiya) but doesn’t show it, and only in rare ocassions does his walls come down to denmostrate his real feelings.

Horikita Maki is a great japanese actress that has a great number of movies and dramas in her resume. Her face, for me, was really girly at first, but then I thought “it’s the same thing in the manga, come on, it’s almost impossible for a guy not to notice a disguised girl”, so I decided it was ok. She has this powerful smile and outgoing character that blends in perfectly with the original part, and so she never gives up to try to help her idol even though he couldn’t care less. Shun and Toma called her "Horikitty".

Last but definetely not least is Ikuma Toma. Now this guy is my personal favorite Nakatsu Shuichi…funny, sometimes an idiot, serious when he has to be and able to move you when he opens up his heart. His role was amazing, going from the normal happy-go-lucky guy to inner-self talks trying to explain that it was okay to love a boy. He never cease to amuse you and several girls fell in love with his irreverance and sweet manners. Go Toma!

The version was good, it’s has a lot of things that are not in the manga but not in a bad way. They did have the Sakura Committee and they did show the development of the main characters relationship, although quite at the end. We have a really active participation between the 3 dorms, something that we don’t get to see in the Taiwanese version, and also you can clearly differentiate which student belongs to each dorm.

Another characters that appear quite a lot here and that aren’t in the manga are the principal and her assistant. They are always organizing events, school trips and contests between dorms, all in the hopes of getting the boys to “bloom” in this short adolescence period, into the adult world without forgetting the true bonds of friendship. That was a nice touch.

Finally, we get an special chapter that does have content; this one comes after the series but is made up of several flashbacks to points in between episodes. This isn’t bad thought, because you get to see some things of the present remembering things from the past that we just assumed happened but didn’t get to see. Again, for me, the special chapter is better because of Ikuma Toma, without this guy I seriosuly doubt the drama would’ve been so succesful, but hey, that’s my personal opinion…what do you think?

The many happy faces of Nakatsu, I never grow tired of them!!
He laughs, but he can also cry...and with such feeling T___T
